The Dylan Hotel Amsterdam believes that good hospitality should be combined with attention for our surroundings. We acknowledge that our industry inevitably impacts the environment and our society and we try to minimize this as much as possible. We think it is important to take our responsibility and therefore we are proud member of Green Globe

Green Globe

Green Globe is the global certification for sustainable tourism. Membership is reserved for companies and organizations who are committed to making positive contributions to people and planet. Criteria vary from reducing waste, energy and water to supporting good causes, sustainability training for employees, awareness among suppliers and much more.

To guarantee compliance to the highest international standards, a third-party independent auditor is appointed. We are guided to the certification process by Green Label Service, who are experts in sustainable hospitality and tourism industry.

Environmental impact

Enery consumption and greenhouse gas emissions
  • We monitor our consumption of gas, electricity and greenhouse gas emissions monthly to gain more insight and to set reduction goals.
  • Keizersgracht 382 has been made gas-free with the latest renovation (2024). It is fully
    insulated, including both the façades and windows. The building is equipped with a heat pump
    and no longer has any gas-powered appliances.
  • We carry out preventive maintenance, to ensure proper and long-lasting functioning of electrical appliances.
  • 85% of all our lights are LED which is very energy efficient. We are aiming to increase this percentage in next coming years to 100% LED.
  • Outdoor lighting is controlled by a motion sensor.
  • We have high efficiency hot water boilers.
  • We encourage our guests to use public transport and we have rental bikes available for our guests.
Water consumption
  • To achieve water savings, we carry out monthly monitoring of our consumption.
  • The toilets are dual flush.
  • We aim for the perfect balance between comfort and water use of our showers.
  • Water faucets in the public bathroom use maximum of 5.6 liters of water per minute.
  • Cleaning of room linen is provided on request, or every two days.
Reducing waste
  • We separate several types of waste: cardboard, paper, glass, batteries, lights, cooking oil, aluminum, swill (food waste) etc.
  • Empty cartridges and toners are collected for the AAP Foundation to raise money.
  • Paperless Express check-out is offered (reducing the number of paper bills).
  • The dishwashing detergent is eco-labelled.
  • The paper that we use for printing collateral, printing paper, toilet paper, tissues and cleaning paper for the kitchen is eco-labelled and from sustainable forestry.
  • In the office, we have the paperless procedures. Invoices are not being printed and approved online, which reduces the number of printing and papers.
  • End of day reports are not printed and are also being signed online.
Food and Beverage (F&B)
  • Menus include local and seasonal products.
  • We offer several fairtrade products like Urban Cacao.
  • The complimentary water in our guestrooms is bottled on location.
  • Earth Water is served in the restaurant. In addition it can be found in the minibars and the fitness room. They donate 100% of the net profit to finance water projects.
  • Sustainable Illy coffee capsules in the guestrooms.
  • All allergens are mentioned on the menu cards of our Restaurant outlets.
Other
  • On the roof of The Dylan Amsterdam, we have 2 beehives with flowers and plants in the surrounding. One of our employees is an official beekeeper and within a few years, we hope that we can offer our own honey during breakfast.
  • The waste is collected by an organization of the municipality of Amsterdam. They started the project “9 straatjes” in which the goal of the project is to have less traffic around the canals of Amsterdam.

Social commitment

Sponsoring
  • Stichting Aap – We recycle all our toners and by doing so, we sponsor stichting Aap.
  • Ocean Cleanup – we sponsor the Ocean Cleanup monthly.
  • In September 2024 we did a Canal cleanup in corporation with Plastic Whale Foundation.
  • In February 2024 we collected food with staff and delivered it to the local food bank.
  • Together with the pension fund of the Hospitality branch, we have arranged to plant trees. By uploading the email adresses of our colleagues, the pension fund will plant 3 trees for The Dylan Amsterdam.
Training

Our employees benefit from training opportunities throughout their careers. This enables everyone to develop and improve their professional skills. Sustainability training is one of the mandatory trainings that all employees have to attend and all new employees receive this training during their first week by their manager.

Employee Benefits
  • We provide a Swapfiets for our employees in their first year.
  • Each quarter we offer our colleagues a chair-massage to relax thier muscles and mind.
  • Twice per year we are hosting a Employee dinner.
  • Every year, around the grape harvest, The Dylan organizes a trip together with Chateau Puynard for 10 employees to help with the grape picking. Chateau Puynard is also featured on the wine list.

Health & safety

Health & Safety

The Dylan Amsterdam takes health and safety very seriously. We tak precautionary measures to guarantee a safe working environment for employees, and a safe place to stay for our guests. In order to ensure this, we follow strict polocies.

  • Evacuation exercises are held 4-5 times per year.
  • During the introduction period, new employees are informed about the safety procedures.
  • We adhere to the food hygiene rules of HACCP and are checked on regular basis.
  • Fire equipment is checked every year.
  • Several employees are trained to give first aid.
