As the winter chill graces the air, we bring you a curated collection of recommendations from our three dedicated concierges, each sharing their personal insights and favorite winter activities. With their wealth of knowledge and passion for Amsterdam, we hope you’re ready for a fresh start to the year!
Our assistant concierge Cem suggests starting with some fun! According to Cem, Comedy Café Amsterdam is the perfect retreat for those seeking warmth and laughter, especially during these colder months: ‘I can testify that the ambiance and the skills of comedians really make it a heartwarming experience.’
His next suggestion, for those that do enjoy a bit of winter chill, is to take in the charm of the Vondelpark, Amsterdam’s largest and in his opinion, most beautiful park. ‘If you are lucky, the park is particularly magical when snow blankets the landscape.’
If you’re in town for more than just a day or two, Cem highly recommends to either venture to the Zaanse Schans, a historic village with wooden houses, mills, and workshops. ‘A quintessential Dutch scene, that really gives a sense of place. Now that it’s winter time, it’s a lot less crowded than usual’ Alternatively, enjoy a guided tour and perhaps even a match at the Amsterdam’s ArenA, if you’re a sports fan.
Our vetted concierge Eddy Bierman, member of Les Clefs d’Or, recommends something special: a rather personal souvenir to take back to the homefront at The Milkmaid Project. Step into the 17th century and dress as a true Dutch master for a most memorable keepsake. ‘The research that has been done to recreate the historic settings is truly remarkable, it will surprise you into how much detail they have gone!’.
Talking about Dutch folklore, one thing that immediately comes to mind is the flower auction in Aalsmeer, Royal FloraHolland. ‘Did you know that it is the world’s largest flower auction, that operates 24/7 to supply the world of fresh flowers? The auction uses a unique clock auction system, known as ‘Dutch Auction’, a very fun thing to see with your own eyes!’.
Concierge Ronald Flitz echoes the recommendation from Eddy for The Milkmaid Project, emphasizing their unique approach and recommending it as the perfect activity on a rainy winter day. If 17th century art is a theme you particularly enjoy, Ronald also recommends the upcoming Frans Hals Exhibition at the Rijksmuseum, showcasing 50 of his best works starting from February 16!
Amsterdam is home to many crafts, did you know that the city has a long-standing tradition as a major diamond cutting and trading hub? The industry dates back to the late 16th century and there is even a diamond district. Ronald continues: ‘a great activity to escape the cold or a drizzle would be the VIP tour at GASSAN Diamonds, which provides an exclusive insight into the diamond cutting and polishing process. The tour includes a pick-up at The Dylan by one of their drivers and is complimented with a glass of Champagne. What’s not to like?’
During your stay at The Dylan Amsterdam, our concierges ensure that every guest’s winter stay is nothing short of magical. Embrace the charm of the season, as Amsterdam reveals its beauty in many different forms.
